I don’t want to be in pain any more!

In the dictionary pain is defined as….

PAIN (Noun)

Highly unpleasant physical sensation caused by illness or injury.

.

Pain is so much more personal than that. People feel pain in so many different ways and for so many different reasons.

If you follow my blog you will know why I am in pain but I haven’t really explained the pain on it own.

I have previously  written a post about my painful morning routine. If you haven’t read it you can find it here. Within that post it tells you what I do in the mornings and what tablets I take, I briefly talk about the pain but not in very much depth. So here goes starting from my mornings which is when I’m in most pain.

The pain that runs through my body every morning is so intense that sometimes I wish the surgeons would cut my leg off! I hate going to bed at night because I know the pain that is coming the next morning.

From the moment my eyes open I feel the pain, it hurts the most when I have to get up and walk. Over night my tendons seize up and I have to physically move my foot to loosen them up, doing this sends shooting pain through my leg. When I first had to do this it would make me instantly cry but I have got used to it now and no longer start my day off by crying. wp-image-450396541

During the day I go through different stages of pain. I get burning pain which feels like someone is holding a match on my leg. I get pricking pain which feels like someone has a safety-pin and is stabbing me over and over again. I get a cramp like feeling 3/4 times a day and pins and needles to go with it.  My leg muscles ache 90% of the time. and I get throbbing pain that comes and goes like waves.

Suffering with chronic pain not only affects me physically it affects me mentally. Dealing with pain on a permanent bases is a very lonely place to be, it separates me from the rest of my family, It beats me down and makes me mentally weak. At first it makes me feel upset and wallow in self-pity, then I’m angry and after that I feel motivated to get something done to heal, to stop the pain but when that fails the depression starts to creep in. I have been through this emotional cycle so many times in the last 3 years that I’ve learnt to just accept how I’m feeling and to just ride it out.

Being in chronic pain means I have to take numerous medications that I know are effecting my health and my body but without them I can’t function. They put my kidneys at risk because they have to work harder to clear all the toxins from my body. I have to take extra tablets to make sure I don’t suffer stomach ulcers from the medication.wp-image-1928569943

Being in pain stops me doing so many things as a mum and the things I can do make me so tired because I have to fight the pain at the same time. A simple walk to the park can cause me so much pain the next day because I’ve overworked my tendons. Just trying to keep on top of my housework takes me nearly all day and completely tires me out. Being in pain is exhausting because no matter what I’m doing its always there eating away at me.

When I go to bed at night, I would love to crawl under the duvet and drift peacefully off to sleep but that doesn’t happen either, I have to take painkillers just so I can lay flat without having any throbbing pain through my muscles as they are trying to relax. It takes me what feels like forever to fall asleep because I end the day feeling stressed out and worrying about what the next day will bring.

I don’t want to be in pain anymore, I’ve severed my time, I’m shattered and I just want a break. I don’t want to keep pumping my system with all these medications, I want to get back to my old self, I want to be happy again, I want the doctors to find some miracle dressings and miracle cure that can help me heal and make it all go away!

9 Tips for an amazing summer with your children.

Here in the UK my children have now broken up for the summer. It’s lovely seeing how relaxed and happy they are but it doesn’t take long for all that to change and they start annoying each other and arguing. If this sounds like your house, there are a few things you can do to turn it around.wp-1501097724900.png

  • Have a summer routine.

My children follow a routine during school time so having a summer routine comes easy to them. Our summer routine is very simple and easy. These tasks need to be completed before we go anywhere or do anything in the morning.

* Have breakfast.  * Brush teeth + wash face.  * Get dressed.  * Make beds.  * Put washing away.

  • Make some house rules.

Sit down as a family and come up with some summer rules. For example if you have older children, what is their curfew time? Do they need to do any chores? For the younger children, Do they have to ask before heading outside to play? Having these rules in place at the start of summer will help the children know what they can and can’t do.

  • Plan an activity or an outing at least once a week.    

Planning special activities or outings can really help the weeks go by a lot smoother. I like to plan a few smaller activities at home and an outing once a week, it could be going to the park, going to the zoo or going to see family but it really helps because my children are not stuck in all week.

  • Don’t plan too much, let them get bored.

Packing too much into the week can leave your children feel exhausted. Give them time to relax and time to get bored. You don’t need to be your child entertainer all the time, its good for them to use their imagination, play with toys and craft they have to hand.

  • Have a back-up list when things don’t go to plan.

Sometime things dont’ always go to plan. Maybe you had planned on going to the beach but it started raining or your children are becoming argumentative and irritable. Make a go-to list of activities you can refer to when thing go wrong. On our list we have rainy day buckets, craft buckets, picnic at the park….

  • Cut back on the housework.

When my children are at school I have a cleaning routine I normally do everyday however when the children are at home I’m a bit more relaxed about it because I don’t want to miss out on having fun with my children just because I had empty the dishwasher or had to put that load of washing away. Some things can wait untill the children are in bed.

  • Set limits on technology.

If I didn’t set limits my children could easily spend all day on their laptops or the XBox so I have to set a time limit, they can have 30 minutes before lunch and an hours after lunch. When they want to use this time is up to them but once its gone they have to wait until the next day to use them again. My son will generally wait until the evening to use his laptop but my daughter will use her hour straight after lunch.

  • Keep their learning skill sharp.

I like to keep their brains working and will get my children to read to me 2/3 times a week and I print out fun work sheets for them to do when they get bored. Keeping their brain active will help them when they go back to school because they haven’t got lazy with their learning.

  • Have fun and enjoy the summer.

When you are enjoying the time you spend with your children and enjoying all the things you’re doing, your children will enjoy doing them as well. The summer holiday is a time for relaxing and having fun together as a family.

My painful morning routine.

Mornings are always the hardest time of day for me, it’s when im in the most pain and in the most foul mood. I am not a morning person and I don’t think I will ever be a morning person.

I have an alarm set for 6am but most days I am up between 5-6am without my alarm. It would be great to say that I jump out of bed feeling fresh as a daisy, make my way down stairs feeling great and pop the kettle on…. Well that’s not gonna happen.

I have to spend the first 5-10 minutes after waking, flexing and stretching the tendons in my ankle because over night they have seized up and hurt like hell. I can then get out of bed, try to hobble quietly past my childrens rooms and venture down the stairs, Most mornings i’m in that much pain I have to go down the stairs on my bum. By the time i’m down I really need a strong coffee.

morning-819362_640I love a really dark roast coffee first thing in the morning, I take my first round of tablets with it and I find the stronger the coffee the quicker the tablets kick-in.  (It may be just in My head but hey, a lot of thing are these days. lol) My first round of tablets are Omeprazole, to protect my stomach, vitamins, added  minerals, my contraceptive pill and then finally my first painkiller of the day is Naproxen. These are an anti-inflammatory drug that helps my tendons, so that is 5 tablets within the first 30 minutes i’m awake.

By now the dogs are starting to get restless as they want to go out in the garden. I grab my coffee, let the dogs out and have my first cigarette of the day. (YES I know this is bad for me, YES I know I should really give up and i’ve tried a few times but with everything else going on I just cant do it right now)

It’s then time to take round two of my tablets, I take three Gabapentin tablets and then head back upstairs to wake up the children.

My older children have learnt mornings are not great for me and try to help as much as they can.

toast-1077984_640Breakfast is next and to do this I have to sit on the top of our bin because I can’t stand up in one place for long. After they will get themselves dressed without much fuss. (Thankfully, my middle daughter used to be a nightmare to get dressed but now she’s getting older its getting easier)

We have a wall poster of their morning routine that they follow which is really helpful.

After they will go brush their teeth and wash their faces, the last step is to double-check their bags to make sure they have everything they need for the day.

My eldest rides his bike to school and I am lucky enough that my hubby is here to take my middle daughter to school. I would love to do the school run everyday and I know my daughter would love me to pick her up, its something I want to work on for her next year in school.

I like to walk my children to the door and give them a kiss goodbye every morning. My son will always say ‘Stay there mum, it’s ok’ but I always make an effort to see them out in the mornings.

medical-1905067_640At this point I take my third round of tablets if I need them. I use my co-dydramol as a back up if my pain is too bad. I don’t always need them, it’s just when i’m having a bad day or I have walked too much the day before.

After the children go to school it’s mine and Ellas turn to get washed, dressed and ready for the day.

This is around 9.30am now and my tablets have fully kicked in and I start to feel kind of normal and I’m able to do normal things again like laundry, hovering and playing games with Ella.  For the rest of the day I try to keep on top of the housework and keep Ella busy with games and activities.

20 Minute dash – Readers challenge

It’s dash time again. I only realised yesterday that I’ve not uploaded a dash post for a while. However I want this 20 Minute dash to be a bit different.

I will do a quick run through of what a 20 Minute dash is.
Firstly pick 2/3 rooms that need a good tidy up. (This is not full on clean or organising)

After you have decided on your rooms, write a list of all the jobs that need doing in them. It doesn’t matter what you write your list on. Sometimes I use pen and paper, sometimes I write a list on my phone.

This is normally the time I take my ‘Before’ pictures.

Finally set your stopwatch/alarm for 20 Minutes and then…

GO GO GO!!!

See how many jobs you can get done within the 20 Minutes.

I like to have music on while I’m doing this so nothing catches my attention and distracts me. (This is very easily done)

After your 20 Minutes are up, go back to your list and cross off all the jobs you managed to complete, some people find it easier to do this as they go along, it’s your choice.

Lastly take pictures of the rooms after you have finished your dash.

These are the before and after pictures of my latest 20 Minute dash. You will notice in the ‘after’ pictures there is news paper on the floor, we are still toilet training the pup and he has a few accidents sometimes.

Also we had a bit of a miss-hap with the pup getting hold of wires and had to move an object in our living room. Can you see which object we had to move? If so leave me a comment and let me know.

Leg ulcer update – Images included

I’m feeling the pain of being an injured parent. 

Last Friday I went to my daughters school summer fayre with my mum. It was great. They had face painting, tattoos, bouncy castle, treasure hunt, tombola, cake sale and lots of transitional fayre games. Half way round I was starting to feel the strain on my leg and was so grateful that my mum was there to help me with the children and all the things they wanted to do.

I knew I would be in pain by going but I really didn’t want my children to miss out.

The next day I was in an unbelievable amount of pain. I had done so much walking the ulcer had started weeping and now had got stuck to the dressings and as walked it was pulling at the surrounding skin. My tendons were completely shot, every step I was taking I had shooting pain going straight up my leg. All the muscles in my good leg were aching because I was limping so much and using that leg for support.

Normally my leg does not cause me this much pain, I have been to the childrens school event before and not had this much pain. I changed the dressing that night and instantly I knew something was not right . It was really weepy and hurt more than normal. As it was Friday I had to wait two days to get a doctor’s appointment. It felt like the longest weekend ever.

Monday came around, I went to the doctors and it was confirmed I did indeed have an infection.wp-image-95502347

When I get an infection it affects my whole body, the pain reaches level where the morphine doesn’t touch it, it makes me feel like I have been hit with the flu and ache all over.

I was given a 14 day course of antibiotics and I was really hoping they start working quickly. I hate feeling like I cant be a proper mum and because the hubby had to step up and take on all the parenting, our house ends up being a complete mess.

It’s now Wednesday and the antibiotics are starting to kick in, I don’t feel as achy and miserable today, im hoping they carry on doing their job because I really want to start getting back to normal.

At the moment it seems to be one step forward and two steps back. This is the picture I took this morning, It has stopped leaking so much and it’s not all over yellow now. The dressings you can see are two iodine patches( The orange squares) and a DryMax padding. These seem to be helping and they are not sticking to my leg either. wp-image-850800991

I’m hopeful that I will regain them two steps and maybe move forward another one but who knows what will happen, I can never predict how it will look or how I will be feeling when I wake up. some days are good and some are bad, I just take everyday as it come now.

Staying happy as a Stay-at-home-mum.

Being a mum is hard work, there is always something or someone who is demanding your attention. Some people think SAHMs have it easy, they can do what ever they want, stay in their pj’s all day however it’s not surprising that SAHMs are a large categorise for many depression polls.

After the novelty of becoming a SAHM has worn off, it can all start getting very tiring and boring, most days you will have a needy, sometimes non-verbal bundle of energy running around wanting your attention and because you are at home the housework seems to pile up as well.

Below are some tips that have helped me as a SAHM.

  • GET DRESSED EVERY DAY

Staying in your pajamas all day may be great at first but it can start to make you feel frumpy and lethargic. Getting dressed can give you that little boost of energy to help you through the morning.

  • CREATE A DAILY ROUTINE/SCHEDULE

Having a daily routines or schedules can really help your day stay on track, Both you and your child will start to remember what you do at certain times, for example at 10am you have a snack, at 11.30am your child goes down for a nap.

  • LIMIT HOUSEWORK

When you are at home all day you make mess, dishes build up, toys are everywhere but it would be a shame to waste away the day doing housework. It will still be there after you have been to the park of sat and played games with your toddler for a while.

  • GET OUT THE HOUSE

Some times getting a little fresh air can really boost your mood. You don’t have to go anywhere special just a little walk down to your local shop can be enough to shift any bad mood. This also has the same effect on your child if they are having a bad day.

  • LEARN HOW TO PLAY AGAIN

Becoming a parent gives you full permission to find your inner child and let it out. Most children love it when their mum sits on the floor and plays games with them. This is a great time to show and improve your happiness because for a while you can forget all about you adult worries and focus on your child.

  • FIND YOUR MUMMY STYLE

Everyone has a different parenting style. Some people like to be out and about all day, some people like to stay at home playing with toys and puzzles and some like to be creative with arts and crafts. Find out what mummy style makes you happy and it will help you get through the day a lot easier.

  • TAKE TIME OUT FOR YOURSELF

I personally think you can not spend all your time with you child/children without getting frazzled at some point. You can not run on an empty tank so taking time out away from your child to relax and refuel is a great way to stay happy.

  • MAKE TIME FOR YOUR PARTNER

Before having children you had all the time in the world with your partner but now it has all changed. Having children can take over your whole life and your partner can feel a bit pushed into the background. Spending some quality time with your partner can be a great way to keep a relationship strong. Some thing simple like one night a week you get a babysitter and go out for a meal or go to see a film.

  • ASK FOR HELP

This is a hard one for me, I don’t like to think I am burdening anyone by asking them to look after my children however we all need a break at some point and I’m sure that you have a family member or friend more than happy to help you. Maybe you need to do some shopping and taking the kids is just to hard or maybe you really need to catch up on an hour or two of sleep because you feel exhausted, all you have to is ask.

I really hope at least one of these tips will help you. If you have tried everything and you are still unhappy and feeling down please GO AND SEE YOUR DOCTOR. They are there to help you and can guide you on the road to feeling happy again.

Meal planning and food shop haul.

We are a family of 5 plus an extra 4 dogs, we live on quite a tight budget and have to work out our weekly and monthly budget for bills and food shopping, then the amount we have left gets split in half. Half goes towards debts and the other half will go into our saving jar. The money in the jar goes toward either days out with the children or new items the children need like school shoes etc.

At the beginning of the month we will stock up the freezer on all the essential we will be needing, i’m not a great cook so I don’t tend to try new receipts, I stick to my go-to dinners that I know I can cook and my family like. We generally do all our other shopping on a Tuesday so I need to get all my planning done on a Monday.

To make sure we stay on budget I like to write out a meal plan every week. Meal planning is a must for our family, it help keep the peace with my children because they help pick their meals so they can not argue when it comes to dinner times. It also helps because I will go through the freezer the night before and pick out meals from what we already have so i’m not over spending on shopping.

I like to use the ‘Free meal planning’ printables that you can find on the internet. I am a great fan of pinterest, you can find so many lovely designs on there. This week I am using a lovely printout, this suits my family because there is enough space to write two meals in each day ( we eat at different times than the children) also there is space for a shopping list on the side.

These are meals we have picked for the week and the shopping list I used.

We don’t tend to stick to just one shop, it depends on what type of items we need, sometimes we go to Asdas, Icelands, Aldis and Tescos. This week we went to Asdas because we needed dog food, we have to get two types of dog food now we have the pup and Asdas are reliable for their puppy food.

Below are the images of what we got on our shopping trip.

My children love eating fresh fruit and their favourites are bananas and melon so these two are pretty much always on our list. The children choose to have jacket potatos for dinner so we got them as well.

This week we decided to get round rolls instead of loafs of bread, having sandwiches all the time can get boring. I have a sweet tooth and love Asdas lemon cake. Kira is not a great eater in the morning so we get her these brioche rolls and she is quite happy to eat them for breakfast.

Callum loves these golden balls in the morning with milk and Ellas likes to eat them dry. We eat quite a lot of pasta so this is an essential item I always buy. My children are always hungry straight after school so we buy these snack bags as they are handy to put in out snack basket.

In this next picture we have all of our tins, condiments and the most essential of all COFFEE and SUGAR. My hubby and Ella enjoy having toast and marmalade as a morning snack so this can always be found in our cupboard.

wp-image-1818245362Last of all these are the items we needed for the fridge, My children love having a yogurt or moose after dinner so we tend to stock them up quite frequently.

We buy dog food and washing powder in bulk so we tend to these every other week, so one week it will be dog food and the next week it will be washing powder, we do this as it fits in our budget.  This week was dog food ( sorry no pictures for this) we brought 12 cans of puppy food and 24 cans for the bigger dogs and we got a large bag of mixer biscuits to go with that.

All of this came to £79.65 Usually our food shopping budget is £70 and we normally have a little left but because of the extra puppy food we went over this week.
