20 Minute Dash – My own version of the famous ‘Power hour’

Before I get into my 20 Minute dash, I want to explain a bit about the Power hour.

A very lovely lady on Youtube called Kimberley has a channel called ‘Style mom XO’ ( I will link one of her power hour video here she came up with an idea where you write a list of cleaning chores you need to get done, you turn off all distractions and you set yourself a timer for an hour and try to get all the jobs done. It has taken off all over Youtube and nearly all of the channels I’ve watched have tried it at least once.

I absolutely love this idea and my kids love to join in as well but with my leg being bad, I can’t rush around like that for a whole hour so I came up with my own version of it. In my ’20 Minute Dash’ It’s not really cleaning it more just tidying up and putting things away.

It’s the same concept of writing a list and turning off all distractions but the challenge only last for 20 Minutes.

The Day I did this Dash was a Sunday and it was such a manic day, I really let the house work slip and it was a mess. I’ll start by telling you a bit about our day and then show you the picture of my house.

My day started off wrong from the very begining… I slept straight through my alarm and even the girls had a lay in and we didn’t wake up until 9.30am, I had to get through my morning tablet routine with the kids around (Which I hate doing) then do a few chores around the house ( which I didn’t even get half of them done) I had also promised the girls that we would go and see the horses that day. ( They LOVE horses and there are some fields and stables near us and the girls love going to see them. We have permission from the owners and they lets us go any time we want to.) So around 11am I made the girls lunch and then we went to see the horses, we spent way to long down at the stables and had to rush back as Kira had a party that evening.

So in these pictures you can see the mess from my half done chores, mess from lunch and mess from us rushing around wrapping presents and getting Kira ready for the party. Also we are still toilet training the pup so when we go out we are putting paper down for him and I hadn’t had time to pick it up.wp-image-1603725053.

Thankfully my toddler had gone to bed without any problems. So I wrote my list, set my timer and off I started.

As you can see by my list they are simple chores to get done, nothing to time-consuming like organise cupboards or scrubbing floors. This is because 20 minutes might sound like a fair bit of time but when your actually doing the dash, time seems to go so quickly.

With both older children out and my youngest gone to bed it was quite nice to whip round and pick everything up without a child wanting something in between rooms. For the first time in a while I actually managed to complete my list. I started in one room, finished my jobs and moved on to the next until I had finished all three rooms.

9 Tips for an amazing summer with your children.

Here in the UK my children have now broken up for the summer. It’s lovely seeing how relaxed and happy they are but it doesn’t take long for all that to change and they start annoying each other and arguing. If this sounds like your house, there are a few things you can do to turn it around.wp-1501097724900.png

  • Have a summer routine.

My children follow a routine during school time so having a summer routine comes easy to them. Our summer routine is very simple and easy. These tasks need to be completed before we go anywhere or do anything in the morning.

* Have breakfast.  * Brush teeth + wash face.  * Get dressed.  * Make beds.  * Put washing away.

  • Make some house rules.

Sit down as a family and come up with some summer rules. For example if you have older children, what is their curfew time? Do they need to do any chores? For the younger children, Do they have to ask before heading outside to play? Having these rules in place at the start of summer will help the children know what they can and can’t do.

  • Plan an activity or an outing at least once a week.    

Planning special activities or outings can really help the weeks go by a lot smoother. I like to plan a few smaller activities at home and an outing once a week, it could be going to the park, going to the zoo or going to see family but it really helps because my children are not stuck in all week.

  • Don’t plan too much, let them get bored.

Packing too much into the week can leave your children feel exhausted. Give them time to relax and time to get bored. You don’t need to be your child entertainer all the time, its good for them to use their imagination, play with toys and craft they have to hand.

  • Have a back-up list when things don’t go to plan.

Sometime things dont’ always go to plan. Maybe you had planned on going to the beach but it started raining or your children are becoming argumentative and irritable. Make a go-to list of activities you can refer to when thing go wrong. On our list we have rainy day buckets, craft buckets, picnic at the park….

  • Cut back on the housework.

When my children are at school I have a cleaning routine I normally do everyday however when the children are at home I’m a bit more relaxed about it because I don’t want to miss out on having fun with my children just because I had empty the dishwasher or had to put that load of washing away. Some things can wait untill the children are in bed.

  • Set limits on technology.

If I didn’t set limits my children could easily spend all day on their laptops or the XBox so I have to set a time limit, they can have 30 minutes before lunch and an hours after lunch. When they want to use this time is up to them but once its gone they have to wait until the next day to use them again. My son will generally wait until the evening to use his laptop but my daughter will use her hour straight after lunch.

  • Keep their learning skill sharp.

I like to keep their brains working and will get my children to read to me 2/3 times a week and I print out fun work sheets for them to do when they get bored. Keeping their brain active will help them when they go back to school because they haven’t got lazy with their learning.

  • Have fun and enjoy the summer.

When you are enjoying the time you spend with your children and enjoying all the things you’re doing, your children will enjoy doing them as well. The summer holiday is a time for relaxing and having fun together as a family.
